Tower Honors Lecture Series Nov 1 2023| Author Genevieve Gornichec

On Wednesday, November 1, Lake Erie College will welcome author Genevieve Gornichec as the inaugural guest of the Tower Honors Lecture Series. She will speak to students and guests about her books, her inspiration, and about her writing process. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the James F. Lincoln Library.

The Witch’s Heart, her debut novel, has been translated into multiple languages and was a national bestseller. It was also an Amazon Editor's Pick for Best Science Fiction and Fantasy. The Weaver and the Witch Queen was published in 2023.

Beyond her success as an author, Gornichec was the unanimous choice for this campus appearance because of the Norse Mythology connection. Norse myths are becoming more a part of the public consciousness thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks about or featuring Thor, as well as the TV show, Loki. Recently, Neil Gaiman also turned the public imagination to the Norse myths with his 2017 Norse Mythology. 

“What is most intriguing about this author,” commented Dr. Jennifer Swartz- Levine, Dean of the School of Arts, Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences, “is that her work centers around a woman's experience. This is a valuable perspective for our students to hear, particularly given our history. I also wanted her to come to campus to show our students that NE Ohio writers have had great success.”

Gornichec earned her degree in history from The Ohio State University. Her study of the Norse myths and Icelandic sagas were in honor of her Swedish grandfather and became her writing inspiration. She lives in Northeast Ohio, where she re- enacts as a tenth-century Scandinavian weaver on the weekends.
