Lake Erie College Helps Host "Winter Wonderland" Prom for| Special Needs Community

Lake Erie College students, faculty, staff, and community members came together on February 7 for the 8th annual “Winter Wonderland” prom for those with special needs, held at Painesville Baptist Church. Originally affiliated with the Tim Tebow Foundation’s "Night to Shine," the event is now independently organized by the church committee led by Pastor Stoney Drain.

The “Winter Wonderland” prom provided a magical evening for guests, with limo rides, a red-carpet entrance, and music by DJ Brandon Stray. Attendees were treated to hair and makeup services by Auburn Career Center students, professional photos, a fun photo booth, and karaoke. A sensory room featuring calming lava lamps and a chance to interact with volunteers dressed as Disney Princesses ensured a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Dr. Katie Davis, a Lake Erie College faculty member, played a pivotal role in organizing nearly 100 volunteers for the event. Her efforts were supported by Heroes Helping Those With Special Needs and the Miracle League of Lake County, a local special needs baseball organization. Many of the prom guests were Miracle League athletes, along with their coaches who volunteered for the evening.

The event also offered respite for families, providing parents and caregivers a chance to relax in designated rooms where they could watch live video feeds of their loved ones enjoying the festivities on the dance floor.

“The evening is just magical for everyone,” said Dr. Davis. “While our guests enjoy themselves on the dance floor, their families can relax and watch them have fun. It’s a chance for volunteers to give back to the community and help make it a night to remember for these kings and queens!”

Lake Erie College is proud to be part of such a meaningful event and looks forward to continuing this heartwarming tradition into the future.
