Program Overview

The Multi-Age Education program prepares students to teach across a wide range of age groups, from early childhood through adolescence. This program includes a strong emphasis on field experiences, providing practical, hands-on learning in real classroom settings.

Key Program Features

Admission Requirements

  • GPA Requirement: A minimum GPA of 2.7 in CORE courses.

  • Grade Requirement: A grade of C or better is required in all core courses.

  • Admission to the program is selective and subject to criteria outlined in the Teacher Education Handbook.

Note: While student teaching is not required for graduation, licensure is mandatory for all areas. State requirements for licensure may result in completing more than the minimum 120 credit hours.

Program Requirements

To complete the major, students must earn a total of 25 semester credits, including the following:

Education Core (12 SH):

  • Educational Media and Technology (3 SH)

Multi-Age Core (9 SH):

  • The Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Learner (3 SH) OR Child Development and Learning (3 SH)

  • Literacy in the Content Areas (3 SH)

  • Planning for Instruction (3 SH)

Field Experience (2-3 SH):

  • Field Experience I (1 SH)

  • Field Experience II (1 SH)

  • Field Experience III (1 SH) (Dual Majors only)

Multi-Age Education teacher candidates are required to select one of the following concentration areas:

  • Spanish

  • Visual Arts

Spanish Concentration

Prepares students for teaching Spanish at the multi-age level.

Study Abroad: Spanish majors are encouraged to study in a Spanish-speaking country. Programs are available in Spain and Argentina. Students wishing to participate in other study abroad experiences must seek approval from the Spanish Department and the Study Abroad Office.

Note: Native speakers, heritage speakers, and students testing into the SP 300 level are expected to complete major requirements at the 300+ level.

Visual Arts Concentration

Prepares students for teaching visual arts at the multi-age level.

  • Students must maintain a 2.7 cumulative GPA to graduate.

  • Transfer students must meet with an advisor during their first semester to plan for program admission.
