Football Players Ellis and Jonard Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team
Lake Erie College senior offensive lineman Nick Ellis (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont/Mt. Union) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division First Team released Thursday afternoon. Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Taylor Jonard (Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut) was named to the second team.
Ellis has been the anchor of the Storm’s offensive line for three years, missing just three starts over his career. As a team, Lake Erie ranks 12th nationally in NCAA Division II in rushing (218.7 ypg). The 32-year old has twice been named a Scholar-Athlete and was also nominated for the 2009 Disney Sports Spirit Award, given annually to college football’s most inspirational player, team or figure. He carries a 3.88 grade point average as a history major.
Jonard leads the Storm with 6.5 tackles for loss and has 21 tackles on the year. He has started every game of his career at defensive tackle and last year totaled 17 tackles (5 for losses) and two quarterback sacks. Jonard has a 3.66 GPA as a pre-med major.
The 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II football teams were selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The first-team members will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The District IV College Division consists of all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in Ohio, Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee. To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his team.
Ellis, Jonard and the rest of the Storm (7-3) close out their second varsity season on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Wesley College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will air live on ESPN 970 (WFUN AM) and www.espn970wfun.com.
