Hedrick named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Softball Team
The 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Softball Team was announced and Lake Erie College's Jessica Hedrick (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) was one of the 23 players throughout the nation honored at the District 4 level as a Second-Team selection. She is the first Storm softball player ever to be recognized with the honor nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA - The College Sports Information Directors of America.
In order to be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergrad and graduate work. The nominee must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games.
Hedrick started at shortstop in all 39 games for the Storm this season, compiling an average of .391 in 133 at bats. She recorded a team-leading 45 runs, as well as a team-high 14 doubles. She also led Lake Erie with seven stolen bases and hit six home runs - the first of her collegiate career. She became the program's all-time leader in runs, also setting the season record, and the all-time leader in stolen bases. She was an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Second-Team pick and a member of the AMCC All-Academic Team. The marketing major has a cumulative grade point average of 3.92.
Lake Erie College went 15-3 to finish second in the AMCC this season - both program bests. The team also earned a bid to the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament for only the second time in program history, recording a win in the first round. The Storm concludes the season as a member of the Final Four in the ECAC Tournament on May 11-12.
