Storm softball is ECAC tournament bound

Lake Erie College is one of six softball teams that has been selected to participate in the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Division III Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed Alvernia for a first-round game on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Lake Erie (21-18) will go up against the Crusaders (31-11) in Reading, Pa. on Campus Field. Alvernia is 15-2 on its home field this season.

Misericordia (32-12) was selected as the tournament’s top seed and received a first-round bye along with No. 2 seeded Washington & Jefferson (26-11).  Gwynedd-Mercy (22-15) is the fourth seed and hosts sixth-seeded Swarthmore (21-18) on Wednesday in the other first-round contest.

Misericordia is unable to host the ECAC Final Four, which means Washington & Jefferson will host the four-team, double-elimination weekend tournament. The two top seeds and the two first-round winners will advance to the event which is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 10 a.m.  The championship game is tentatively scheduled to start on Sunday at noon.

This is the Storm’s second appearance in the ECAC Tournament after earning a bid in 2006. Lake Erie lost to Richard Stockton (N.J.), 8-5.

Lake Erie enters the tournament after finishing third in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament this past weekend with a 1-2 record. The Storm’s 21 total victories on the season is the second highest in program history.
