Inaugural football season to kick off with international opponent
Lake Erie College Announces 10-Game Club Football Schedule
Lake Erie College football is gearing up to make history on Sept. 1 when it plays its first scheduled club game as part of a recently announced 10-game schedule. The Storm will also be preparing to teach the Czech Republic’s National Club Team Champions, the Prague Lions, a little bit about American football.
“We are very excited about our club schedule,” said Head Coach Mark McNellie. “It’s exciting to begin the schedule against an international opponent. The unique opportunities and game experience will help us build a strong foundation for our program.”
On its U.S. tour, the Prague Lions (a team of men ages 18-35) hope to gain a better understanding of the sport of American football. A week prior to the face-off between the Storm and the Lions on Sept. 1, the two teams will practice together. The Lions will also attend a practice of the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State University football team. A trip to the National Football League Hall of Fame is also on the Lion’s itinerary.
In its inaugural season, Storm football will compete at the club level with a 10-game schedule. The overall schedule, that includes five home games to be played at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville's Kiwanis Recreation Park, features collegiate junior varsity squads, a prep opponent and a club team.
Intercollegiate varsity play will begin in the fall of 2008 for Lake Erie football. Storm athletics are currently in an exploratory phase of reclassification from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II status. The teams are on track to move into the provisional phase of reclassification for the 2008-09 academic year, while becoming fully active members for the 2009-10 academic year.
