LEC Receives Accreditation-Provisional for PA ProgramLake Erie College is pleased to announce that today, the College received accreditation-provisional approval from the Accreditation Review Commission on the Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) to start a new physician assistant (PA) program. This approval is the capstone of approximately three years of planning.
This 27-month intensive master's degree program was designed in collaboration with University Hospitals in Cleveland. The first cohort of students will start in May of 2014.
Lake Erie College's president, Michael T. Victor said, "The PA program is the first in a series of health-and medical-related master's and doctoral programs planned for the College. I am pleased to be working with our outstanding faculty and the board of directors to help shape a new vision for the College to greatly expand our health sciences programs. Occupational therapy, biomedical engineering, speech pathology and physical therapy are a few of the areas we are exploring. In addition, we are planning the implementation of a three-year accelerated pre-professional undergraduate program to help our students complete their bachelor's and master's degrees in a compressed time frame."
Joe Weber, program director and associate professor of health sciences, led the effort to start the new PA program. Weber said, "This is an exciting opportunity to help meet the medical needs of the community as well as the growing demand for physician assistants across the country."
The PA program will also have an optional dual admit procedure so students may complete an M.B.A. degree upon completion of the program. This will give students needed business skills in addition to their medical training.
Weber commented on the strong college faculty support for the program "We are blessed to have an incredibly talented Lake Erie College faculty and very strong undergraduate programs to prepare students for many areas of health sciences and medicine," he said.
Applications are still being accepted for the program, and interviews will start in November of 2013. More information about the PA program can be found at www.lec.edu/pa.
