LEC Board Member John F. (Jack) Turben To Receive OFIC Award

(Painesville, Ohio) - John F. (Jack) Turben, member of the Lake Erie College Board of Trustees, is the 2013 recipient of the Earl F. Morris Trustee Award. Turben will be recognized during The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) Evening of Excellence event on April 10, 2013 at The Westin Columbus.

An alumnus of Yale University, Jack Turben was founding partner of Kirtland Capital, a private equity firm. He is chairman of China Centric Associates and mayor of Kirtland Hills Village. He joined the Lake Erie College Board of Trustees in 1985, serving as chairman from 1986 through 1993. He chaired a highly successful $10 million four-year capital campaign and for many years was chairman of the board's finance committee and member of the executive and other committees. In 2004 he became an Emeritus Trustee, resuming his service in 2006, providing leadership instrumental in the transformation that has occurred at the College since then.

In addition to lending his expertise to the College, Turben has provided generous financial support both through his own personal gifts and those made by the Susan and John Turben Foundation, and he has been instrumental in bringing other donors and volunteers to Lake Erie. Most notably, he led the College through an extremely turbulent period in the 1980s, literally saving and assuring the longevity of Lake Erie by putting together a locked-door meeting of prospective donors and persisting until he had received pledges of $1 million. In 1996, in recognition of his extraordinary service and leadership, Lake Erie College awarded Turben an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

"Without Jack's guidance," said Michael Victor, president of Lake Erie College, "Lake Erie College would not exist today. Jack Turben was a lifeline for Lake Erie for many years, and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude for all he has done."

The Earl F. Morris Trustee Award was established to recognize trustees of OFIC member colleges and universities who have demonstrated commitment and service above and beyond the norm for the guidance and betterment of the institution and its students.

The reception will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the program will end at approximately 8:30 p.m. There will be various photo opportunities and brief media interviews as requested. For more information, contact Senior Director, Marketing Communications Karey West at 614-469-1950 ext. 111 or
