Lake Erie College Presents Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure”(Painesville, Ohio) – The Lake Erie College Theatre Department will present an original adaptation of William Shakespeare’s "Measure for Measure.” The play will be held October 25, 26, 27, November 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and October 28 and November 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theatre in the Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts. The play is directed by Lake Erie College Assistant Professor of Theatre Dr. Jerry Jaffe.
Set in Vienna, "Measure for Measure” depicts a mysterious duke played by Matthew Theisen, Instructor of Education and Director of Clinical Experiences and Partnerships, who leaves his young lieutenant Angelo, played by freshman Connor McCarthy, in charge while the duke travels abroad. The duke sneaks back into Vienna in disguise to move amongst his people and spy on Angelo. It turns out Angelo has taken a very hard line against vice crimes, shutting down all of the city’s bordellos. Angelo also sentences Claudio, played by community actor Ricky Davis, to death for impregnating his wife before they are married.
Angelo’s hypocrisy is revealed when he propositions Claudio’s sister, a young nun played by senior Jessica Drake, in exchange for her brother’s life. Hilarity ensues as the duke attempts to undermine all of Angelo’s plans, while remaining hidden in the shadows disguised as a foreign friar.
"Adding to the humor is the introduction of characters from the circles of vice and sin in Vienna: pimps, madams, constables, prisoners and other farcical characters. These ‘varlets’ are led by the resourceful Pompey, a pimp played by local actor and comedian Gaz,” said Jaffe.
The play features choreography by part-time Lake Erie College dance instructor Nick Carlyle and vocal assistance from part-time instructor Jean Priddy. The sets and costumes are designed by 2007 alumna Julie Harter and lights by area set designer Michael Breeze.
In 1964, the Lake Erie College Community Theatre produced "Measure for Measure” on the stage of the Morley Music Building. Under the direction of Dorothy Silver, faculty emeriti Dr. Harold Fink and Jake Rufli played the Duke and his nemesis Angelo, respectively. Photographs and programs from this production will be displayed in the B.K. Smith Gallery in Royce Hall from October 12 - November 3. Guests are welcome any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
