Mathematics

Through individual advising and coordinating with other departments on campus, the Mathematics major has the chance to prepare for a career in business, industry, teaching, research and development, and quality control, or pursue graduate education in a variety of disciplines. 

The student who obtains a minor in Mathematics along with a major in another discipline displays an ability for abstract problem solving that will make them more attractive on the career or graduate school path.

The mathematics department offerings are planned with the following objectives: 1) to prepare students for further study in graduate school; 2) to prepare future teachers of mathematics at the middle and secondary level; and 3) give the student of mathematics the ability to think critically and use mathematical reasoning to solve complex and everyday problem. The mathematics major at Lake Erie has the opportunity to take independent research courses and special topics to enhance their special interest and to meet the needs of their career objectives.

A major in mathematics at Lake Erie College provides a course of study that enhances the liberal arts and the professional aspects of the student’s education. Mathematics major receives interdisciplinary courses in math as well as courses in application and theory. Small classes that allow the student to be involved in individual and class projects, attend seminars, and interact with their peers and the faculty.


The department of mathematics provides advanced courses for students majoring in mathematics and offers instruction appropriate for students of other disciplines. A student who wishes to continue mathematics in graduate school or to seek employment on the basis of a strong mathematics background is advised to take special topics in mathematics including at least one course in computer information systems.
